Mozambique’s Machangulo Peninsula is idyllic in its uniqueness. It is remotely located across the bay from the great city of Maputo and its international airport. The city and the peninsula are separated by the magnificent Maputo Elephant Reserve National Park, through which there are no paved roads. To access the peninsula is an adventure in itself, via private aircraft, a boat to Santa Maria, or via an off-road vehicle through the Elephant Reserve.
The Machangulo Private Reserve boasts 25 kilometres of private beach, and 3,000 hectares of a coastal dune and forest ecosystem. Each MACHANGULO property overlooks the pristine beach and the alluring Indian Ocean. Our guests will have the opportunity to see whales, sea turtles, dolphins, elephants, hippos, crocodiles, monkeys, eagles, cape buffalo, and numerous species of antelope, all within the reserve.
Turtles nest and lay their eggs on these beaches, and the nests are protected by our local community. These 6,000 colourful souls are our partners in protecting this wonderful place. Fire Island Eco Retreats is proud of its tradition of service to this community, which includes enhancing the school buildings with electrification, providing housing for teachers, supporting student tuition, and contributing nourishment and shelter support for families in need. Fire Island Eco Retreats provides 2% of all of its revenues to FIRE ISLAND CHARITIES MOZAMBIQUE (a US 501(c)(3) corporation), to aid in its efforts to support both the communities and marine ecology, in Machangulo and elsewhere in Mozambique.
