South Africa
The “Mother City” of Africa is one of the most ideal locations in the world. Its Mediterranean climate and fertile land provide comfort, and an abundance of fauna and flora. The warm, sunny summers are tempered by cool ocean breezes, while mild winters bring migrating marine life, and encourage the discovery of the wonders in and around the city. The Cape area of Southern Africa is many wonderful things, but it is a far cry from “wild Africa”.

Mozambique
Mozambique’s Machangulo Peninsula is idyllic in its uniqueness. It is remotely located across the bay from the great city of Maputo and its international airport. The city and the peninsula are separated by the magnificent Maputo Elephant Reserve National Park, through which there are no paved roads. To access the peninsula is an adventure in itself, via private aircraft, a boat to Santa Maria, or via an off-road vehicle through the Elephant Reserve.

Conservation Projects

What started as an ambitious project to build a luxury boutique hotel on a private island, has given birth to a massive venture to create a sustainable safe haven for wildlife, particularly marine, on and around Fogo Island, off the North Coast of Mozambique.

Turtle Monitoring

At present, we have two teams rotating on Ilha Do Fogo. They are responsible for the maintenance of the runway and also keep the beach and reef free of plastic. These individuals have had no training (yet) as resources are limited.

Fish Farm

The threat to animal species is a complex subject. Anthropogenically speaking, the issues cannot be completely attributed to serving greed and medicinal traditions, since a major contributing factor is overpopulation

Pebane Airfield

Pebane had a disused airfield that has fallen to ruins due to lack of funding. To ensure the progress of Fire Island Conservation projects, a useable airfield is crucial. Fire Island gained the permissions of local government and Quelimane Civil Aviation and has already started with a self-funded project to improve the Pebane Airfield.

Sundome Project

Due to the remoteness of Pebane Beach Lodge and Fire Island, fresh water is an issue. Together with entrepreneur, Alex Smith, Fire Island Projects is developing a solar still that can produce over 20 litres of fresh water per day per still. The still can use sea water or gray water

Pottery Workshop

When we discovered that one of our exploratory divers is a highly qualified ceramic engineer, our vision for our pottery project fell into place.

Pebane Harbour Roads

Elfin Cove is ideally situated at the northern entrance to the inside passage of the Alaskan panhandle, 120 kilometres west of Juneau. Anglers can anticipate a fishing adventure, rich with salmon, halibut, sea bass, and other gamefish, within a 30-minute cruise from our dock.

Woodwork

Northern Mozambique possesses some of the highest quality hardwood in the world. As such, the area has been subject to irresponsible over-harvesting, which has almost depleted the natural forest. Sadly, the local population never prospered from the resource.
